Travel accessories

I know that, as far as travel accessories go, wallets aren't really that exciting.

They just kinda sit in your purse or pocket or backpack. They don't really have to be pretty — they just have to be functional.

But, what if you could have a wallet that was both pretty AND functional for your world travels?

Allett, maker of thin wallets for both men and women, approached me a while back about checking out some of their products. I wasn't super excited at first, to be honest — I mean, like a said, wallets can only be so exciting.

But once they sent me a set of their Slim Leather Women's Wallet, I found myself quickly changing my tune.

Allett: The best travel wallet?

Not only are these wallets pretty (and SOFT, too), but they are also extremely functional — especially from a traveler's perspective.

The wallet I got is red leather on the outside and teal nylon on the inside. (But these also come fully in nylon if you don't want to buy leather.)

Features that I love about this travel wallet:

  • 4 pockets for credit cards that don't overlap — meaning you can fit quite a few cards in here (up to 24, reportedly) and the wallet will still close without feeling super bulky (I currently have about 12 cards in mine).
  • A zippered pocket on the outside for a bit of change.
  • TWO billfold pockets — perfect for keeping money and travel receipts separate, or great if you often find yourself with more than one currency in your wallet.

The divided bill pocket makes this Allett my ideal travel wallet — no more stuffing receipts in with my cash, or having to keep my pounds and Euros all in the same place!

Allett also makes RFID secure wallets for both women and men (including a RFID wallet large enough to also hold a passport), as well as smaller billfold wallets in both leather and nylon.

The wallets are all made in America, too (in San Diego, to be exact), and I always like to buy local whenever I can.

Allett wallets

If you're looking for a stylish wallet that's also great for travel, an Allett is definitely worth considering.

Like I said, I have the slim leather women's wallet. Some other styles of Allett wallet you might like include:

How does an Allett hold up?

Updating this post in 2018, I'm STILL using the same leather Allett that I originally write about here in 2014. That's 4 years of traveling all around the world with the same wallet.

The leather is now showing some wear, but the wallet is still in excellent shape – AND I still get compliments on mine all the time!

When I eventually need to buy a new travel wallet, I'll be buying an Allett again.

Do YOU have a go-to travel wallet?

  1. Kiev, Ukraine! Where I am living right now. πŸ™‚

Good choice! πŸ™‚ You can totally still “travel” at home. And of course a wallet is good for anywhere!

I’d take it anywhere I travel – hoping next place is Finland to see Northern Lights but I’d take it to a domestic trip such as Melbourne or QLD as well. Looks like a great wallet. πŸ™‚

I’m really surprised by how much I like it! And I’ve gotten quite a few compliments on it, too, when I pull it out to pay for things.

Finland to see the Northern Lights would be awesome!

Would love to win this! I’m nursing my duct tape wallet along but it’s on its last legs!

Haha, this would be a nice replacement!

whaaaat I so need this, the zipper on my wallet just disintegrated and I’m way too poor to buy anything nice, haha

Well, good luck! (The good news: these wallets are only like $45, so totally affordable!)

Sweet! I’ve been looking for a wallet to replace the one I bought in ValparaΓso, Chile (sadly, it has started to disintegrate). If I had this wallet right now, the first place it would go would be the Long Expected Party in Shaker Village, KY!

!!! How have I not heard of this event??

Probably because it’s small, and not very widely advertised — but of all LotR conventions, it is the best! There’s nothing like retiring to the Shire for a week with like-minded fans… http://www.alep-ky.us/index.html

          It sounds awesome! Have fun!

Would love to take it with me to South America! I’m so desperate to go… one day! I’d really love to visit Colombia, it looks like such a fascinating and friendly place.

    Lizzy at Nomad Notebook

Colombia is very high up on my travel wish list, too!

What a great wallet! I’d love to take this to England, keeping my curreny separate would be helpful! I love the flat folding idea as well, less bulk.

Yes, it takes up surprisingly little room in my purse, which I love! And this is great for keeping currency separate!

I’d take it everywhere. and hopefully on a trip to the Galapagos!

That would be awesome! I really want to go there someday.

No exciting trips coming up, but this wallet would have been amazing on the last trip to Scotland/France…eliminating repurposed pouches to keep pounds and Euros separate, ha.

You still might need a little change purse, but yeah, the divided bill pocket is great!

And it’s okay, if you win I’m sure there will be more travel in your future! πŸ™‚

I’ll use it everyday, travel or no travel, a brick of a wallet that it is πŸ™‚

That wallet looks great, I’ve been looking for a more compact wallet for home and for my next trip to England and Scotland!

This one is a great option! Very compact, but pretty, too.

I am heading to Ecuador and Peru in January! I would definitely carry this gorgeous wallet in my travel purse!

It really IS gorgeous – I’ve gotten quite a few compliments on mine!

What a great idea. I’ve been travelling for 8 months now and this would have been amazing, especially in my first stop in Indonesia, I ended up hating my wallet within 3 weeks…and everything bulky for that matter. Absolutely love finding new and inventive ways to pack lighter and travel safer!

Same here! I like being organized, but don’t like bulk!

Portland, Oregon. I’m looking to go there early next year, and this wallet seems like it would come in handy.

Ooo Portland. I’m also hoping to go there sometime next year!

I think this would make a great everyday wallet, but the first travel-related use would be an upcoming trip to Egypt and Jordan in January. I cannot wait!

Oh yes, it’s a great everyday wallet, too!

ooh, this is so lovely! thanks for the chance to win!

oh, oops, I was supposed to answer a question–well, I would use it every day and take it everywhere!

      You’re very welcome! Good luck!

I am planning a trip back to Bolivia, so that wallet would come in handy for keeping my American money and my B’s separate!!!

Looks like an awesome wallet – I’d love to win it!

I’m heading to Canada soon so would love to take it there!

I am spending the next couple months exploring California (I’m from Boston) and then I’m off to Australia after Christmas. I’d love this wallet to come with me!

Australia for Christmas! I’ve always wanted to do that!

We’ll be going to Amsterdam – as well as at least a couple other places – this winter. It would be great since we’ll have multiple currencies to manage. πŸ™‚

Yup, the extra pocket definitely comes in handy!

Strangely enough, I’d take the wallet to Nepal first.

      Not strange at all! πŸ™‚

I would take it to South Africa, Tanzania and Zanzibar! I leave in 4 weeks, very excited πŸ™‚

      Sounds like an awesome trip!

Hmm, I’m living in Brussels since september, so i guess I’d first take the vallet to some surrounding town or so!

Sounds like a good plan to me!

Dear Amanda, I LOVE your blog. I recently was in Alaska and just because you wrote about it I went with MICA Guides to the Matanuska Glacier and visited Williams Reindeer Farm. It was awesome! Unfortunately Denali, The Moose, wasn’t there anymore.

I am always looking for a perfect wallet for my travels – I don’t want to have a big portemonnaie on every tour. This would be perfect! Maybe I can take it with me when we go to Vegas in october – yeay!

That’s so awesome that you went to those places after reading about them on my blog! Glad you had a great time. πŸ™‚

Probably a grand tour around Southeast Asia! Despite coming from this part of the world, I haven’t seen much of it yet…

Sounds like a lot of fun! I spent 6 weeks in Southeast Asia earlier this year and had a great time!

I like the idea of the two billfold pockets, because when I travel I always seem to need to carry 2 different currencies (even if one of them is just US dollars, just in case. I mean, everyone loves the dollar don’t they?) I also love the fact that there’s a spare pocket for change, because so many wallets you see just don’t have them, which makes no sense whatsoever! This travel accessory series you’re running is great by the way, I already have a couple on my Christmas list πŸ™‚

Yup, I always have some US dollars stashed somewhere, no matter where’ I’m traveling.

The change pocket in this won’t hold a TON of change, but it’s better than not having one at all!

And I’m glad people are enjoying these accessory reviews so much! I have a few more coming up this fall!

Nice! Going Kyoto, Japan soon – sure is handy for my travel and I so love the design!

Japan sounds awesome! And yes, I love the flat design of this, too! I hate bulky wallets.

Would love to try this wallet out!

Planning on doing a little road trip through New England so this would be great

Sounds fun! Are you going soon? If so, you’ll see some awesome fall colors!

i would likely use it as an everyday wallet and i’m hoping to book a ski weekend this winter so i’d bring it there too!

It works great as an everyday wallet, too!

I’m going to visit a friend in Denmark for Christmas and hopefully head to Ireland in the new year! Would love a proper grown-up and pretty wallet to take along =)

Well I think this one would definitely work for you!

Not very exotic, but we are planning a trip to Washing DC next year. I have never been,

Still exciting, though! There’s so much to see (and often for free!) in DC.

I’ve been looking for a good travel wallet and I need a journal! I would take the wallet to India- currently planning a trip for early next year!

Well then this is the perfect giveaway for you! πŸ™‚

Super cute!! No travel plans at the moment, unless you count home for Thanksgiving! (12 weeks-ish and counting!!)

It works great for when you’re not traveling, too!

I don’t have travel plans at the moment. However, I’m working in a school so I hope to make some summer plans!

I would take it everywhere with me since I take my wallet with me everywhere I go

Ah! I actually have a penchant for travel wallets oddly enough, and I have yet to find the perfect one for me. These sound pretty stellar though and like they would help to keep things organized (which is what I am always looking for in a travel wallet). Thanks for another giveaway contest!

Well maybe this one will be just what you’re looking for!

I would take it everywhere, to the moon if I could. πŸ™‚

If you get a ticket to the moon, take me with you! πŸ˜‰

On our upcoming trip to Europe! πŸ™‚

I’m dying to go back to Europe!

I would take it on my upcoming honeymoon, destination is still unknown!

I’m still trying to decide where my next trip will be (maybe out West?) but the wallet would be great for everyday use, too!

Going out West is always a good idea! πŸ™‚

But yes, this is great for everyday use, as well!

Europe, as I’m leaving really soon!

I have just moved to Ireland from Australia to study for 6months, and I hope to do a lot of travel around Europe while I’m here! The Allett wallet would be so incredibly handy with those two separate bill pockets, as The North of Ireland use the Sterling and the South use the Euro, and they are all mixed up in my wallet at the moment! (Makes for some awkward payment experiences… Trying to give the checkout lady a $50 Euro when she asked for Β£50…). I would take my Allet wallet all over Ireland, the UK and hopefully Europe!

Ugh, yeah, that would be so annoying to always have your money mixed up! (And who wants to carry two separate wallets around with them?)

I like the wallet, both functional and nice-looking. I’m hoping to go to Europe (France and Belgium) next year and it would be a great addition to my travel gear!

Both great destinations – and great destinations to take stylish accessories to!

This would be great for my next trip to Central America to separate out the different currencies!

Headed to San Francisco next for a conference, so this would be great!

RFID secure? So that means they’re safe from NFC (near field communication) hackers, right? If so, awesome, as I’ve been looking for something like this recently!

Yup! And they make RFID-secure wallets for men, too!

anywhere in india or wherever i happen to go

Ah man, I am SOOOOO picky with wallets! It’s all about the compartments for me. This one looks so gorgeous though, and being able to fit 24(!) cards is encouraging!

I’m dubious about whether you could really fit 24 cards in this and still be able to close it (and I don’t have enough to test it out), but it handles 12 cards plus money and coupons and change just fine! πŸ™‚

I’d take it to Vegas, since that’s where my next vacation is booked.

I’d give it to my girlfriend and I’d imagine she’d take it with her everywhere!

It would make a very nice gift. πŸ™‚

I’d take mine to the US, where I should be moving next year. So if I win that baby she’ll be getting a round trip to Portugal and back to her home country. πŸ™‚

Awesome! Where are you hoping to move to in the US?

I lost my ‘travel’ wallet in the ocean in Costa Rica. This one looks perfect!

      Definitely a good replacement!

going to vietnam, hong kong, and laos in december!

Ooo, sounds like an awesome trip!

I will be going on my first backpacking trip to Europe in the beginning of next year! I just found your blog & love it, thanks for all of the good advice!

That’s so exciting! Europe is such a great place to start. πŸ™‚
