New River Gorge NP

Plan your visit to New River Gorge National Park and Preserve located in the West Virginia mountains. Today, New River Gorge is beloved for outdoor pursuits!

The park is open to visitors year-round, but I would recommend late spring or early fall. New River is in the Appalachian Mountains and makes for the perfect road trip.

Travel Tips

White Water Rafting

Home to some of the best rapids on the East Coast, this is a worthwhile adventure. Enjoy everything from a leisure float to Class IV and V rapids. We had a blast!

Hiking Trails

Try an easy trail like the Endless Wall Trail or the Long Point Trail or visit Sandstone Falls, a 1500-foot-wide waterfall on the New River.

Mountain Biking

Arrowhead Bike Farm has the best mountain bike trails in New Gorge. Rent one of their Trek mountain bikes and hit the 15 miles of trails on your own.

The bridge is a architectural marvel; it was the longest single-span arch bridge in the world. You can also see exhibits at the Sandstone Visitor Center about former Indigenous inhabitants.

The History

Viewpoints

See a view of the New River Gorge Bridge just outside the Canyon Rim Visitor Center and views of the New River at Grandview, which are all easily accessible.

Rock Climbing

There are a ton of climbing routes ranging from easy to difficult including some right off the hiking trail, the Endless Wall Trail. If you are a beginner you can book a guided tour.

Head to nearby Babcock State Park or Hawks Nest State Park for more hiking plus try a day trip to the beautiful Summersville Lake if you're craving more fun water activities.
