Welcome to “Stuff You Should Know About” – a monthly collection of travel news, tips, photos, and other odds and ends that don’t really fit in anywhere else but that I still really want to share with you.

Random travel news

Using a driver's license as ID

At the end of last year, news stories were circulating about how the TSA was no longer going to recognize driver's licenses from certain US states as valid forms of ID for flying in 2016. This could have definitely been a problem, considering that licenses from 12 US states and provinces are on the “not-valid” list. But now the TSA says your license will still be fine for traveling by air until January 2018 – and hopefully by then all states will switch over to TSA-friendly licenses.

Free national parks in Canada

To celebrate its 150th birthday, Canada is going to offer FREE entry to all of its national parks for an entire year. The only downside is that this won't happen until 2017 – but definitely something to look forward to.

Cool travel app/website of the month

I get a lot of emails every week — sometimes every day — about new travel apps and websites. I don’t write reviews very often about apps/websites (only the ones I really, really love), but some of them are still worth mentioning!

This month, check out:

Hopper

I know that no one really NEEDS another flight search app, but this new one is nevertheless worth checking out. There's no website, so you'll have to download the free app for either iOS or Android. But once you do, you can use the app to figure out the best time to fly, as well as the best time to buy your ticket.

Hopper

This is perfect if you know you want to go somewhere, but you don't have exact dates in mind. You plug your destination into the Hopper app (along with where you're flying from), and the app shows you when you can find the best prices for that flight. It also has price predictions, and the ability to “watch” a trip and get alerts for when the price drops.

You should pack this

Each month, I’ll feature one or two of my packing must-haves. This month, Im recommending:

SKROSS Travel Adapter

There's one thing that every single traveler needs to pack on an international trip: a travel adapter so you can plug in all those electronics! I've bought and used all sorts of adapters over the years, and I think my favorite so far has to be this one by SKROSS.

Skross

The compact adapter will work all over the world, and I love that you don't really have to worry about losing pieces. This particular model also comes with the added bonus of two built-in USB ports, making it even easier to charge up all those gadgets.

>> Buy one on Amazon.

What I'm planning right now

Because my blog runs a little bit behind of what I'm currently doing, I figured I would use this monthly update to let you know what I'm up to, and what adventures are coming up next! (You can also find more detailed info in my monthly newsletter.)

Coming up:

  • A trip to Minnesota to visit the Mall Of America in early February.
  • A weeklong adventure to Arctic Norway with my friend Marie from To Europe and Beyond in late February. Fingers crossed we can catch the Northern Lights!
  • A trip to the American Southwest with Elliot in mid-April to visit as many national parks in Utah as possible leading up to National Park Week.
  • AFRICA in May! My dad and I are going on a tour to South Africa and Victoria Falls, and then I'm planning to stick around and hopefully do an overland trip through Namibia and Botswana.

Which adventure are you most excited to read more about?

That’s it for this month’s edition of “Stuff You Should Know About!” Which section was your favorite this month?

  1. The Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area offers so much in addition to the Mall of America, even during winter! I have lived in St. Paul for almost a decade. Feel free to contact me if you would like suggestions for restaurants, neighborhoods to visit, etc. 🙂

Thanks! I’ve been invited there by Mall of America, so I don’t know how much time I’ll have to explore the area on my own. But I’ll keep your offer in mind! 🙂

Hi Amanda, who are you doing your overland safari with in Namibia and Botswana? I personally work with Sunway Safaris as their NZ representative. If you haven’t got plans in place yet I can get in contact with the team there to see if you can join a trip?

Really enjoy your blog. Love how you mix work with travel rather than trying to be a full time travel nomad. I can’t travel full-time either with a young family so running my own wholesale travel business has been the best step for me.

Hi Natasha! I don’t have anything booked yet, though I’m currently talking to a company about traveling with them. If that for some reason doesn’t work out, though, I will certainly get in touch! 🙂

Sounds like you have some amazing trips coming up! I’m a huge fan of the Hopper app as well, I’m so happy I found it last year!

Can’t believe I only just discovered Hopper!

And yes, some big, awesome trips coming up – I’m so excited!

Hopper sounds like a cool app. My travel dates are usually pretty flexible, so I always try to plan my dates for when tickets are cheapest. This looks like a really great way to see all the options. Thanks for sharing!

Definitely worth checking out, especially if you don’t have set travel dates!

The fact that all parks in Canada are free in 2017 excites me so much! That’s my travel plans for next year sorted! I’ve just had to cancel my trip to Victoria Falls this year, I hope you have an amazing time and I can’t wait to see your pictures & hear all about it!

    Danielle

I know, I love that Canada is doing that! I’m kinda bummed the US isn’t doing it this year to celebrate 100 years of the National Park Service!

This year will be incredible you are planning alot of things so good luck with that

Thanks! I think it’s going to be a great year for sure!

    Your photos are really stunning!
We are so curious about your national park experience in Utah, we’ve been only to Zion so far, but we were blown away! Looking forward to reading (and seeing wonderful pics 🙂 ) about other parks there, too.

Thanks! I’m really excited about Utah, too. In the past I’ve only ever been to Arches and Monument Valley – both stunning, but I’m excited to see even more! Our rough plan so far includes Zion, Bryce, Canyonlands, Arches, Monument Valley, Page (AZ), and the Grand Canyon. It’s going to be a hell of a trip!

        Looks like it! 🙂
We’ve been to Zion as a last stop after our Arizona road trip. ‘Page, AZ’ meant nothing to us until we’ve been there and now we always get super excited to tell everyone about everything awesome in that area when it is about Page… 😀 Sure you’ll love it. 🙂

I’ve actually been to Page before, but I liked it so much that I decided I have to take Elliot there! That, and I missed Horseshoe Bend the first time, and I can’t skip it again!

So pumped to read about your trip to South Africa! I’ve always wanted to go! My boyfriend’s interest in South Africa though is a little different then mine…he wants to do the Great White Shark cage diving…can’t say I share the same interest lol

I’m totally going great white shark cage diving! I’m also sooooo excited about it! 😉

I drove through a small bit of Utah once on a business trip and have been wanting to go back ever since. I can’t wait to see all your national park pics!

I can’t wait to go! I love the Southwest so much, and I’ve been dying to see more of Utah’s national parks – plenty of photos will definitely be taken!

I downloaded Hopper a while ago and just couldn’t get into it. One of my favorite travel apps is Hitlist. Basically, you create a list of places you want to go and the app uses skyscanner to find cheap flights to all the places on your list.

Ooo that sounds like a cool app, too!

some great photos and resources. thanks

I love Hopper, although some of the bigger airlines (American) aren’t included and I’ve noticed sometimes a really good deal will include a 17 hour layover in Istanbul. But it’s still good to see what’s out there!

That travel adapter looks pretty sweet, I’ll have to check it out!

Yeah, I don’t think any flight search engine is perfect. But I do think Hopper is one of the cooler ones! And yes, that travel adapter is the best!

AH Africa is going to be amazing!! I’m doing Norway in the middle of March with the Hurtigruten (I managed to get an outrageously good deal) and am out of this world excited for it. Fingers crossed also for the Northern Lights. If I don’t catch them hopefully I’ll at least be able to look at your pretty pictures.

Oooo sailing with Hurtigruten is on my “someday” list for sure! Should be an awesome adventure, with or without Northern Lights!

I’ve been to Colmar a few years back and it’s truly a magical little place!

Definitely! I loved Colmar so much.
