Welcome to “Stuff You Should Know About” – a monthly collection of travel news, tips, photos, and other odds and ends that don’t really fit in anywhere else but that I still really want to share with you.

Random travel news

London to Australia direct

In early 2018, Qantas plans to start offering direct flights between London and Perth. The flight will be 17 hours long on a Dreamliner, and will offer travelers a much quicker route to Australia. (But I dunno… would YOU want to spend 17 hours on a plane?)

Fathom Cruises ending

The concept of voluntourism on a cruise was an interesting one when Carnival announced its new line of social impact cruises. But Fathom Cruises are already ending. The brand is still going to offer some social impact shore excursions, though, so it's not going away entirely.

Cool travel thing of the month

I get a lot of emails every week — sometimes every day — about new travel apps, websites, courses, products, and more. I don’t write reviews very often about apps, websites, or courses (only the ones I really, really love), but some of them are still worth mentioning!

This month, check out:

eBags “Win Your Wishlist” contest

eBags contest

I'm definitely one of those travelers who loves getting new gear – new bags, new clothes, new gadgets… So when a contest crops up where I can win some of those goodies, I'm always all about it.

Which is why I want to share eBags' “Win Your Wishlist” contest with you! The popular gear site is giving away 1 gift certificate worth $250, and 3 gift certificates worth $100.

Entering is pretty simple. You just need to go to this site, choose your “Wish List Personality,” add things to your wishlist (there are TONS to choose from), and then share your wishlist either on Facebook or Pinterest. Easy. This would be a great way to score some of that gear that you”ll need for your travels in 2017.

The contest runs through December 24, so be sure to enter now!

Featured bloggers of the month

Check out this month’s Featured Blogs:

I am Dan Hagen and travel is my life. I’m a guy from Chicago who travels and writes as often as my time and money allow. I have always loved to travel, but my wanderlust wasn’t fully understood until I saw the open country of Alaska for the first time in 2012. I am on a lifelong quest to see the world by train, foot, bicycle, and raft. I like open country roads, urban nightlife, good cuisine, local beer, alpine mountains, wild rivers, and lots of other badass shit. And I will write about it as often as I can at Chicago Backpacker.
My name is Angie Silver and my blog SilverSpoon London is a lifestyle, food and luxury travel blog following my adventures in my hometown of London and around the world. I aim to give the low-down on London’s hottest new restaurants as well as cool and inspiring destinations globally.
My name is Tracy from Tracy’s Travels in Time and I have been traveling for 30+ years – solo in my 20’s, as a single Mum in my 30’s, and with my husband in my 40’s! I have lived in 6 countries across 3 continents, and am moving next year to Australia. I love meeting new people and experiencing new cultures, and also love history (I am a qualified history teacher), train travel and maps! I enjoy trying new foods, too, and will always find the best milkshakes wherever I go. Traveling for me is a lifelong obsession and each decade brings new opportunities and adventures.

This month, I’m recommending:

Heat Holders socks

Now that we're firmly into the winter months here in the Northern Hemisphere, it means it's time to break out the warm layers, waterproof boots, and colorful hats. And something that's been an essential part of my winter wardrobe for the past year have been my Heat Holders socks.

These puppies are *seriously* warm, with fuzzy insides and lots of fun colors to choose from. These are my go-to thermal socks, and I have no doubt that you'll love them, too.

What I’m planning right now

Because my blog runs a little bit behind of what I’m currently doing, I figured I would use this monthly update to let you know what I’m up to, and what adventures are coming up next! (You can also find more detailed info in my monthly newsletter.)

  • March 2017 – New Zealand: It's official: Elliot and I are going to New Zealand in March! We're going to spend roughly two weeks campervan-ing around the country (can you believe I've never done it before??), and I can't wait to show him all my favorite spots. We'll be hitting up places like the Coromandel Peninsula, Rotorua, Wellington, the West Coast of the South Island, Queenstown, the Southern Scenic Route, and Akaroa. We're also hoping to hike the Tongariro Crossing, which has been on my wishlist for years!

Are you on Snapchat? If so, make sure to follow me (dangerousbiz) to follow along on my travels in real-time!

That’s it for this month’s edition of “Stuff You Should Know About!” Which section was your favorite this month?

  1. I’m intrigued that you’re going on a two-week trip to New Zealand. I always thought it was a place suitable only for longer trips! I can’t wait to see the ground you can cover in two weeks!

This will actually be my fifth trip to New Zealand. I may actually stay a bit longer, but my boyfriend works a corporate job and can’t really take any more than 2ish weeks off at a time – so we’re going to try to fit as much in as possible! (But yeah, normally I wouldn’t want to go for less than a month!)

As always, love your photos. Those heat socks sound pretty nice right now since it was 74 degrees yesterday yet only 17 today!

Doing vanlife around New Zealand sounds like fun. Can’t wait to hear more about your trip!

The Heat Holders are the best for winter! I love mine.

Nice round-up and cool shots from Instagram! Can’t wait to hear all the stories from New Zealand.

There will no doubt be lots of stories from New Zealand. 🙂

Beautiful Instagram shots as always! 🙂 I don’t know about that direct flight to Australia though. I would love to be able to travel to Oz more easily, there’s so much I still want to do there! But 17 hours on a plane? I barely manage to sleep 7 hours in my own bed sometimes, so I have no idea how I’d manage a 17 hour flight going crazy haha.

Yeah, 17 hours sure does seem like a long time! I’ve flown 12 hours to New Zealand a few times, 11 hours to South Africa, and 13 hours (once) to China. But 17 just seems like so much longer!

That ebags giveaway is tremendous … they’re one of my favorites for finding random travel accessories I never knew I needed!

They have so much great stuff! And yeah, the contest is great! Be sure to enter before Saturday. 🙂

Those Instagram shots are amazing and heat socks are pretty good stuff to know in this season

Those Heat Holders are the BEST winter socks – I love wearing mine around the house, too!
