Welcome to “Stuff You Should Know About” – a monthly collection of travel news, tips, photos, and other odds and ends that don’t really fit in anywhere else but that I still really want to share with you.

Random travel news

New TSA screenings for electronics

I've mentioned this before, but last week the TSA officially started implementing more thorough screenings of electronic devices at airport. Now you'll have to take any gadgets larger than a cell phone out of your bag when you go through security screening. It's certainly better than banning things like laptops and cameras on planes, but it does mean the security screening process could take a little longer now.

US to ban travel to North Korea

North Korea has never been on my travel wish list – which is probably good, because there's talk that the US is going to ban its citizens from traveling there, citing safety concerns. The news came after the death of 22-year-old Otto Warmbier, who was imprisoned in North Korea, fell into a coma, and died after he was deported home last month.

Cool travel thing of the month

I get a lot of emails every week — sometimes every day — about new travel apps, websites, courses, products, and more. I don’t write about these things often (only the ones I really, really love), but some of them are still worth mentioning!

This month, check out:

Skillshare

Coffee in Cleveland

This month, I had the opportunity to try out some courses on Skillshare. Skillshare is an online learning community that offers students more than 16,000 classes in categories like design, photography, writing, film, crafts, technology, business, and even culinary. You can take courses on everything from search engine optimization to documentary filmmaking to Excel to making fresh pasta.

I checked out courses on photography with a Nat Geo photographer, creative writing with Susan Orlean, and SEO with Rand Fishkin. I wrote about my thoughts on Skillshare here: Feeding My Inner Knowledge Nerd with Skillshare

And the best news is that Skillshare wants you to check them out for free. I have two free months of unlimited access to all of Skillshare's online courses to give to you guys. Just click here to start your two free months.

Top Instagram shots from the last month

Instagram is one of my favorite social networks. I mean, who doesn’t love pretty photos?? If you aren’t following already, follow me on Instagram @dangerousbiz!

Here are some of my most-liked photos from the last month or so (there's certainly a theme here – you guys seem to love Scandinavia!):

I was getting ready for bed in my hotel room in Stokmarknes, Norway. I had brushed my teeth, removed my contact lenses, and put my PJs on. And then I decided to peek behind my blackout curtains one more time – and I was greeted by the Midnight Sun bursting through the clouds. ☀️ In Northern Norway, seeing the Midnight Sun isn't guaranteed in the summer, but this was looking like a promising “sunset” at nearly midnight. I decided I couldn't miss it. So I threw on my shoes and coat, grabbed my camera, and headed outside. And I was greeted by this view at the little cabins at the Vesterålen Kysthotell where I was staying. 😍 I spent the next hour (because that's how long “sunset” can last in this part of the world in early July) taking photos of cabins and sun bursts and beautiful reflections. And even though it meant I missed out on a bit of sleep that night, I'd say it was totally worth it! What do you think? Worth it?

What I’m planning right now

Because my blog runs a little bit behind of what I’m currently doing, I figured I would use this monthly update to let you know what I’m up to, and what adventures are coming up next! (You can also find more detailed info in my monthly newsletter.)

This summer has been really busy already, but I have one more big adventure before I take some time off to get married in October:

August: Road trip! – My sister and I are getting ready to head off on another road trip. This one will coincide with the solar eclipse on August 21. We’ve booked a hotel in Idaho for the eclipse, and plan to explore South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, and more on the way! We'll be visiting national parks and hopefully exploring some parts of the US that you may not have heard of before.

You can follow along on my travels in real time on Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat! (I'm @dangerousbiz everywhere.)

That’s it for this month’s edition of “Stuff You Should Know About!” Which section was your favorite this month?
