Random travel news

United's nightmare

By now we've all heard about the United Airlines debacle, when a paying passenger was brutally dragged off a plane to make room for United crew. In response, United has pledged to reduce overbooking and raised what it's willing to pay travelers who volunteer to take a later flight from $1350 to $10,000. (How can I get on one of those $10,000 flights?!?)

Take my reader survey!

Every couple of years, I like to survey you guys, my readers, in order to find out how you travel and how you use my site.

I would love for you to take my latest reader survey! It's only 15 questions long and should take only about 5 minutes of your time.

AND, to add a little incentive, I'll be giving away some Amazon gift cards to survey participants. I'll give away one $50 gift card if I get 100 or less responses, and two $50 gift cards if more than 100 people help me out!

You should pack this

Each month, I’ll feature one or two of my packing must-haves. This section usually contains affiliate links, meaning that if you purchase through my link(s), I may earn a small commission (at no extra cost to you!).

This month, I’m recommending:

Packing cubes!

You guys know that I love packing cubes; it's really no secret! But with the busy summer travel season quickly approaching, I thought I'd remind you this month just how much I love packing cubes.

I use these handy cubes on just about any trip, whether I'm packing a suitcase, a backpack, or a rolling carry-on bag. Packing cubes come in multiple sizes, and usually fit together, puzzle-like, in any size bag. I use anywhere from 2-4 when I pack: one for shirts, one for dresses, one for sweaters, etc.

If you love being organized like me, then you really should invest in a set of these.

What I’m planning right now

Because my blog runs a little bit behind of what I’m currently doing, I figured I would use this monthly update to let you know what I’m up to, and what adventures are coming up next! (You can also find more detailed info in my monthly newsletter.)

May: Orlando – At the end of May, I'll be heading to Orlando for the grand opening of Universal's new water park, Volcano Bay. The media week is going to be jam-packed with cool behind-the-scenes opportunities, and I can't wait to hang out with some of my best blogger buds.

June: Oregon – Elliot and I are heading out to Oregon in early June to visit his sister, who lives in Bend. We’ll also road trip to some of the state’s other famous spots like Portland, Crater Lake, and the Painted Hills.

July: Scandinavia – Europe, here I come! I'll be spending all of July in Europe, with trips currently planned in Norway and the Faroe Islands. And while I’m over in that part of the world, I’m thinking I should probably finally visit Copenhagen, too!

July: Ireland – After Scandinavia, I'll be hopping over to Ireland to do a trip with Shamrocker Tours. I'll be doing their 5-day “Giant's Rocker” that mostly concentrates on the Causeway Coast in Northern Ireland.

August: Road trip! – My sister and I are planning another road trip this summer in order to coincide with the solar eclipse on August 21. We’ve booked a hotel in Idaho for the eclipse, and plan to explore South Dakota and Wyoming on the way – I'll finally be visiting Yellowstone!

Are you on Snapchat? If so, make sure to follow me (dangerousbiz) to follow along on my travels in real-time!

  1. Great shot of Cape Town…one of our absolute favorites. Jealous of your trip to Norway in July. We just went in March and it was absolutely amazing – maybe one of our favorite countries ever.

This will be my third trip to Norway, and I’m just as excited as if it were my first! Such a gorgeous country.

Your Cape Town pic has got me excited for my upcoming trip there in less than a month … can’t wait!

Awesome! Hope you have a great time!

Copenhagen is wonderful! Take the free walking tour, visit Tivoli at night, and go see the Little mermaid 🙂 it’s not as disappointing as people said hah!

Thanks for the tips! I can’t believe that I’ve never been before – I definitely think it’s time!

    Survey taken!

I’ll also note that the ‘up to $10,000’ is unlikely to ever be reached, if only because you only need one or two or five seats. You’ll get people that’ll bite earlier than that… Now that said, I’m imagining the riot where everyone’s holding out for $10,000… then EVERYONE jumps on it…!

Yeah, I realize that $10K probably won’t ever be handed out. But it’s good to know they’re now able to offer more than just $1350 if necessary!

Yay for Yellowstone! You’ll find the hot springs there look similar to your Rotorua pic…really colorful steaming pools against a mountainous backdrop. Enjoy!

Wow – you get to some truly amazing places. So jealous.

I could send you an amazing pic of Blackpool tower, sadly it’s taking us forever to save up enough to get away anywhere more exotic. Fingers crossed for later in the year, until then I will keep reading your blog & dreaming 🙂

I’m definitely pretty lucky, and am glad that enough people like to follow along on my adventures!

You’ve got a great summer coming up.

I’m looking forward to reading about your travels to Scandinavia and Ireland. I’ll be going to Sweden myself in a few weeks, and to Ireland for TBEX. Are you still going?

I actually saw you at one of the TBEX conferences. I think it was in Costa Brava, but you were surrounded by loads of girls, and anyhoo, it was my first one so I was a little shy, but not anymore….! 😀

I do have a lot coming up for a summer that I originally thought was going to be relatively travel-free!

Unfortunately I won’t be at TBEX in Ireland this year. Normally I would consider it, but this year it ends 3 days before my wedding, so timing-wise it’s just not going to work. 😉

Love that you visited my home town of Milwaukee! I’m not a huge museum person either but the Milwaukee art museum is one of my favorite spots. Next time you’re in town be sure to check out the Public Market!

I went to the Public Market twice! 😉 Also a very cool spot, and so much good food!

I turned 30 in April and I visited my home away from home, Edinburgh! I’m so deeply in love with that place and every visit there cheers me up so much 🙂

I’m in love with Edinburgh, too!

I fell in love with your Cape Town photos. I should spend more time browsing your instagram account from now on. Inspiring!

Definitely check out my Instagram account! 🙂
