As a woman who frequently travels alone, I’m used to hearing “the lines.” From family, friends, even complete strangers. The usual “Be careful,” the frequent “You’re crazy,” and even the occasional “You’re gonna die.” I’ve heard it all and have become used to it — but that doesn’t mean that I’ve come to accept the skepticism surrounding women traveling solo.

After years of traveling — many times on my own — I have come to realize that while, yes, traveling as a woman CAN sometimes put you in precarious situations, it doesn’t have to be scary or dangerous if you’re smart about it.

I believe that women can and SHOULD travel solo.

Solo travel has taught me so many things. It has taught me to be more adventurous and spontaneous. It’s made me more willing to challenge myself and push myself out of my normal comfort zone. It’s taught me to be a bit more outgoing, and yet at the same time has taught me to enjoy my own company. And, most of all, solo travel has made me more confident.

Basically, solo travel has changed my life.

And that's the reason why I got involved with the #WeGoSolo project.

The #WeGoSolo movement began a few months back as a Twitter hashtag and a series of blog posts that encouraged women to travel solo and travel safely. This evolved into weekly Twitter chats (every Wednesday at 11 a.m. EST), and more attention on women traveling alone.

And now there's one more facet to the #WeGoSolo movement.

Your Dream Solo Destination Contest

A team of solo female travel bloggers (including myself, Mariellen of Breathe Dream Go, Sherry of Ottsworld, and Shivya of The Shooting Star) has teamed up with HostelBookers to find out more about how and why women travel (or don't travel) solo.

In order to gather this information, Hostelbookers has compiled the “Going it Alone” Survey, which is open to all female travelers, regardless of whether you travel solo or not.

I'm excited about this survey, not only because it will allow us to learn a bit more about solo female travel, but also because there is a component built in that allows me to give something back to YOU.

In conjunction with the survey, HostelBookers is hosting the Your Dream Solo Destination Contest, in which one reader from each of the 4 blogs involved will win a voucher from Hostelbookers good for 2 nights for 2 people at ANY property listed on the HostelHookers website.

This is a pretty sweet prize if you ask me.

So how do you win, you ask? Easy. There are two steps:

  1. Take the Going it Alone Survey.
  2. Leave a comment on THIS blog post about YOUR dream solo destination.

One reader/commenter from my blog will win one of the 4 prizes!

I've written before about destinations that are great for solo female travel, but now it's time for YOU to give some input!

The Details

The #WeGoSolo team is really excited about partnering up with HostelBookers for this contest and survey. And HostelBookers is excited to be involved, too. Here's what they have to say:

The team at HostelBookers are passionate about helping you fulfil your dreams of seeing the world, and we know many of our customers are very happy choosing to travel solo. We’ve been encouraged by Mariellen Ward's #WeGoSolo project from the start and we hope that by teaming up on this project we can inspire women to have the confidence to travel solo if they want to.

The brand even has a guide to hostels for women! Very cool.

  • My dream solo destination would be backpacking through Eastern Europe.

    • DangerousBiz says:

Good choice! Eastern Europe is often overlooked by travelers making their way through Europe, but the region is great! I especially love Romania myself.

  • Katherina says:

I really want to go to Chile – I had a first taste of the country a year and a half ago and absolutely want to go back to explore the rest (back then, I visited Torres del Paine National Park).

I so would love to go to Central Asia (Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan etc) or Iran! And going there alone would be such a huge adventure!! Sure, it’d be challenging but I don’t think there would be too many problems, I know other girls who did such trips solo and loved it! In less popular destinations I find local people to be much more protective of solo ladies, they all do they can to make them feel welcomed and safe and they are just the most hospitable people ever. I’ve traveled solo to places like Armenia or Georgia and these were some of my best trips!

Australia- until September when I did Oktoberfest with Busabout (and was the only non aussie in a group of 50) I didn’t know much about Australia but since some of the girls on our trip were coming to the end of their travels they were talking a lot about home and now I really want to go!

I keep planning how I want to do things, and think I’d quite like to fly into Darwin & then get the Ghan to Alice Springs and visit the red centre, then make my way to Perth, and along to Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra & Sydney. Then fly up to Cairns and swim on the Great Barrier reef.

    It’s a dream trip, right? I can do whatever I please 😉

    • DangerousBiz says:

That’s exactly right – it’s your dream trip! That sounds pretty awesome, though. I’ve heard good things about the Ghan.

  • Rease says:

I would love to explore Spain on my own. I would really enjoy the challenge of making my argentine Spanish work there!

  • Helen Pitcher says:

I always wanted to do the Work Abroad scheme in New Zealand, but I’m ashamed to say I let people talk me out of it because of the cost. That was a big mistake. I’m making up for it now. I was just lucky that this time the opportunity isn’t yet dead. South Island.

  • Nora says:

I’ve almost always travelled solo. When I did not, the whole trip ended up with organizing, managing and conforming to others’ plans, moods, views and wishes. Since I travel solo, I can enjoy the travel and the destination fully and in my own, sometimes rather peculiar way. I love to get lost in quaint old cities or trek for hours in a forest and these are way better alone and in silence than in a continuously chattering company. I’m not much for nightlife and things like that. A dream destination for me would be New-Zealand for its natural beauty or anywhere in the middle-East for history and culture. The latter poses a greater challenge for a female travelling solo, but I consider it doable.

    • DangerousBiz says:

I know exactly what you mean about the freedom of traveling solo.

And NZ is a GREAT destination for solo travel! One of my favorites.

  • Evelien says:

If there is one place I would like to go it is New Zeeland. I think it has a spectacular scenery and it can be adventerous. I’d love to see the places where the Lord of the Rings was shot, do some hiking and explore as much as I can… This is really my dream trip and I hope I can do it one day!

  • Chiara M. says:

I’d like to do to Iceland 🙂

  • maz says:

My dream location is the algarve

  • Anamaria says:

Your post is very inspiring! Guess I’ll have to try solo travel, after all! 🙂
And my dream solo destination? Ireland!

    • DangerousBiz says:

Definitely give it a go! You might find that you love it. 🙂

And Ireland is a great solo travel destination!

  • Jacki says:

My dream destination is Japan. I’ve traveled across Europe and South East Asia solo, and decided to move to Cambodia solo. I love the inner joy that solo travel can bring. Japan is top of my ‘one day’ wish list destinations.

  • sejal says:

I would love to go to Peru and experience the ancient history and civilization. I have been dreaming of this since quite some time now. !!!!

  • Mimi says:

I was born and raised by my vietnamese parents in Germany. Right now, I am in the USA as an AuPair. Besides taking care of my host children, I definitely got to see a lot of places so far.
I traveled by myself for my vacation to Florida and Mexico which was my first time solo. At first I did’nt intent to travel alone but after I have waited for companion’s answers week after week, I decided to just fix the plan and book the flights. I didn’t want to wait any longer or even worse not being able to go at all just because no one else could come!
In the end, I can say that I do not regret it and that I had the best time. Going solo for the first time made me worried of course but after my vacation I felt so self-confident. I feel more open to new people and culture now.
Some months later I traveled to Chicago on my own again just because I felt so good about it the last time.
I still want to see a lot of places, so I have a whole dream destination list. For now, I would be really excited to see Australia, Thailand and India.

    • DangerousBiz says:

Good for you, Mimi! Traveling solo really can teach you so much, both about the world AND yourself. Glad that you went for it and have no regrets!

St Pete was a bit scary at first, not being able to even read the language, but once I got my bearings, everything was much better, and I was able to enjoy the city. I wasn’t too fond of the hotel they put me up in (location only, hotel was great), so I made sure I didn’t stray too far away when it started to get dark. Which was easy, because it didn’t get dark until after 10pm!

So many places, so little time (well, I mean, I don’t think I’ll live long enough to see every corner of the planet)
My dreams have changed so much over time. When I was a kid, I had a thing for Norway (I still do, but it’s not on the top of my list anymore). Now it’s more Central and South America; but this may have more to do with the fact that I’m currently learning Spanish and I would like to speak it better.
My most unattainable dream trip, at the moment, is Hong Kong. There is something about “Asia Light” (easy Asia) that appeals to me. I’m also a city girl, so I’d love to see all the skyscrapers.

    • DangerousBiz says:

Yup, life is definitely too short, and the world is too big!

I agree about travel dreams changing over time, though. I hope you get to follow your Central/South America dreams soon! And maybe make it to Hong Kong eventually, too. 😉

  • Katie says:

I just started telling people that I was quitting my job and traveling around the world and the responses have been mostly positive. Similar to you, I have gotten lots of “you are crazy” and “is that safe” and “how can you afford that”. My aunt told me that if I travel to Honduras, I will be murdered! So right now I am dealing with assuring people that I am independent, smart and will take all precautions to be safe! Thanks for all you do for solo-female travelers!

Still, there’s something so utterly alluring about Turkey, maybe because I hear that it’s a Westernized version of the Middle East, maybe because my friends who go to Istanbul come back raving about it, maybe because I can imagine myself wandering around by myself.

I have traveled both solo and with other people. I love going solo because I have the freedom of choice. I can change my plans for the day if I wish, and I’m not affected by my travel partner’s mood or their perceptions of a place (and vice versa, of course..I’m no peach…LOL). I learn a lot about myself when I travel alone. It’s made me so much more confident in general. If I waited for someone to travel with me, I could wait forever.

My dream destination…so tough to choose; too many places to go, people to meet and not enough time! . I’m leaning towards Turkey, Morocco, Greece lately.

I don’t think it would be the easiest solo travel destination, but it’s a place that’s held an inexplicable fascination for me ever since I was a child.

I love the spinning the globe idea… I’m not sure if I’m brave enough to actually go through with it, though!

  • Beth says:

Definitely New Zealand! It was the first country outside the US I wanted to visit (thanks to LotR) but sadly I’ve never made it there yet because of costs! Hoping someday!

There are many. Next one is Chukotka in the Russian Far East… in winter, on my bike. The snow, the cold, the challenge, the Arctic, the tundra, the reindeer and of course, the people who live and survive in such an inhospitable place all year, every year…

    • DangerousBiz says:

Holy cow! That would be an epic, epic adventure! A Russian winter on a bike? You are a brave (or crazy?) woman!

  • Jenny says:

My dream solo trip would either be Colombia or Peru (Machu Pichu!). Thanks for the opportunity!

I’d love to go to Rio, buy a new VW camper (which they make in Brazil!!) and drive it from Brazil, across central America, the US and up to Canada, staying on couches, in hostels and, of course, in my van!

Yay for female solo travellers!! Have done a few relatively long solo trips my self (1month – 1year) & totally love it!! My dream destination: Bali

  • Sarah says:

I really want to go to Peru. I was thinking about doing a volunteer programme there and then travelling a bit afterwards. I hear it can be pretty dangerous in Lima though.

    • DangerousBiz says:

Every big city is going to have its seedy parts. You just have to be a smart traveler! I think your volunteer/travel idea sounds great.

  • Lena R says:

I have been to most of the US with friends but last year i did London and Paris for 2 weeks all alone. I was encouraged greatly by my mom. she said ” Dont hinge your enjoyment of life on other people, you may not get another chance.” My dream as of now is Italy! Fly into Milan, then train travel to Florence, Venice, Naples(and Pompeii) then finish with Rome and the Vatican.

    • DangerousBiz says:

Your mom is very wise, Lena! And she’s right – make your own happiness, even if that means doing things you want to do on your own.

  • Elma Bartholomew says:

This project couldn’t have found me at a better time. I’ve been trying to visit the UK since 2005. For reasons umpteen, it never worked out. I’ve been planning a visit to my dear friend in London this September. I’ll be meeting him after 10 years!! I’ve also been planning a solo trip this July to celebrate my 25th. I was thinking Macau or Thailand. Hopefully either of this will be made easier if you pick me 🙂

  • Marcella says:

    Dream solo destination: Iceland.

  • Belinda says:

My solo dream destination is China. Though my family is Chinese, I know very little about the country as I was born in Australia. I find that I tend to meet more people traveling solo than if I’m with friends as I have to fend for myself, and it makes me that little bit more confident with each trip!

    • DangerousBiz says:

I’ve gained so much confidence from traveling solo! And it sounds like China would be a perfect choice for you.

  • Natysprit says:

my Dream solo destination is London!! I have been studying English for years and always my goal to study this language was to have the opportunity to visit London. I find this place a nice place to explore, to get into the culture, people, etc, etc, etc. Really, I have no words to explain and describe how interesting this place is for me. The only thing I can say is that this is one of the place from the world that excites and makes me feel butterflies in my tummy! 🙂

A lot of people are choosing New Zealand! As I’ve said before, it’s a great place to travel solo.

  • Shatla Sabri says:

Hi 🙂 My dream destination cant be a single place as there are so many countries to explore and live and love!!..I would love to go to an exotic place like Maldives or a transcontinental country like Turkey or Canada which according to me is the best country to live or a dangerous place like Mexico..I really wanna go to these countries and see for myself how strong & confident I am!

  • It is very difficult for me to choose a dream solo destination with there being so many amazing places and cities that I have not had the pleasure in visiting. After living the past 12 months of my life in Germany and learning about a new culture, It has made me want to take a step further and learn or even integrate into many more different cultures of the world. However, if I were to choose one place in the world that I would love to visit that would be Chicago, USA. From a young age, Chicago has been on the top of my list and I hope that one day I will be lucky enough to have the opportunity to go there!

    • DangerousBiz says:

Great choice, Rachael! Being a Midwest girl, I’ve been to Chicago quite a few times – it’s a really cool city!

To be honest, I’d travel anywhere solo. I’ve been all over the world by myself, and I love to travel solo.

But to be specific, there’s only one answer for me. It has to be Africa (in general), but to be specific, I’d say Zambia.

I love the wild and rugged beauty of the landscapes and the most beautiful and resilient people I have ever met.

I’ve been there many times but still, Africa will always be my choice.

I travel solo because it never occurred to me that I shouldn’t! My first thought when I wanted to book trips was ‘let’s see how much a ticket costs,’ not ‘I need to find someone to go with me!’

The big solo trip I really want to do but don’t know when I can is Antarctica – it’s expensive enough without having to pay for the single supplement!

New Zealand really is an incredible country. And I guarantee that it’s even prettier in person than it is in all those photos you’ve seen of it!

  • Ana Marie Bacul says:

My solo dream destination is China. I have been to the touristy spots of China and I recently discovered that China has vast areas of ecological interest. I love nature and I’m very much interested about the idea of doing ecotour/s which I believe is best experienced in China. I dream of traveling to Zhangjiajie Hunan, Jiuzhaigou Sichuan, Yangtze River, Guilin and Lhasa Tibet.

    • DangerousBiz says:

An ecotour in China certainly would be a lot different than visiting the big cities and major tourist sites!

  • Nienke Krook says:

A great contest! Deciding to travel solo for the first time was the best thing I ever done and even though I travel mostly with my boyfriend now, I still like to sometimes go on a solo trip. You just get a bit more assertive, it’s easier to meet new people and I love the feeling of exploring a totally new country, all on my own. That’s why I choose China, as it would be a totally different experience with culture, religion, food and language, would love to throw myself into that adventure! Good luck with the site.

  • Lyndal says:

I went to South America solo for three months, 5 years ago. I am going back again in three months, for 6 months this time. Love it!

  • Sarwat says:

My dream solo vacation would be to go to Australia and New Zealand! They are places full of adventure, and at the end of the day that is what I want my life to be about.

    • DangerousBiz says:

They are definitely full of adventure. Make sure to visit Queenstown in NZ – soooo many adventure sports there!

  • Kaylin says:

I love traveling solo! I have been to several countries on my own. For this, I was going to say New Zealand but I am already planning to go there in a few months anyway for a working holiday (so it’s less of a dream and more of a soon-to-be reality!) so I will say Australia! It is my dream to drive through the Outback to Uluru and go swimming/diving in the Great Barrier Reef.

  • Samantha Partridge says:

My dream destination is the whole world. I want to see it ALL!! 🙂 Do an around the world trip following the sun. However if I do have to chose a top 3, then that would be Africa, South America and Europe… Nope can’t narrow it down to countries.

    • DangerousBiz says:

You sound like me! My dream destinations are constantly changing, too.

      • Samantha Partridge says:

I always try to go somewhere new on each trip I take and I go where ever has a good sale or job or a great opportunity comes up. Half the time at least I start making plans for a holiday and by the time I am leaving it looks almost nothing like what I started out planning on doing. 🙂

  • Jelena says:

I know it’s not very exotic, but I still haven’t been to UK. I particularly want to wee Edinburgh.

    • DangerousBiz says:

Doesn’t have to be exotic to be your dream destination! Plus, the UK is awesome. Scotland is one of my favorite countries – and Edinburgh is great!

  • Lourdes says:

I would like to go back to South America to visit the countries I didn’t have time to visit on my first trip, like Ecuador and Colombia.
I was travelling around that contintent for 16 months on my own, and I absolutely loved it. It was my first trip alone, and before I started it, I was a bit scared that I wouldn’t like the experience, but I met so many people, and everyone treated me so great, that I fell like home everywhere I went.
That’s why I stayed for a bit longer in every place I visited, and, unfortunately I run out of money before I could visit the last countries in my plan (Ecuador and Colombia).

  • Basiul says:

I love travelling solo, it makes me feel kind of obliged to meet more new people than when travelling with friends. My dream destination is Ireland – I would want to see literally everything – from big cities to green deserts. I love Irish culture and throughout all these years I have heard so many wonderful stories and opinions on the people and the sights… I hope one day I will be able to feel the Irish spirit all around me!

  • Florbela Torres says:

Because I’ve never been there, but it is a destination that has always attracted me!
It’s a great city, beautiful, interesting, with a lot of people!
Holds a vast mix of cultures and traditions … Fabulous architecture, Roman ruins, medieval city, the “capital of the Catalan Modernism” …
For me it just seems to have a mystical ambience!
It has many places to meet and visit! Several museums, squares, want to go to the Picasso Museum and the Natural Sciences 🙂

There are many other places I liked to go. India <3 Greece, Italia, Turquey, Copehagen, The Netherlands, …many!

  • Eve says:

Seeing as I’m planning for my solo RTW next year, it’s a though question. I wouldn’t be going to those places if I didn’t dream about it.
But if I have to pick, I’ll go for Scotland. Not very unique, but I’ve been wanting to go for the longest time.

  • Carmen says:

My dream solo destination would be Asia! I’d love to spend some time backpacking through Japan, China, S. Korea, Thailand, and Cambodia. If I had to pick just one, probably Japan. I speak a little Japanese, and seeing as I haven’t been to Asia before it seems like a fairly good place to test the waters. I’ve already done solo trips to western and eastern Europe, and they were phenomenal, especially Poland and Croatia.

  • Sonia says:

My dream solo destination is Istanbul!!!!

  • Melanie says:

My dream destination would be Australia/New Zealand. I had my first solo traveling experience last summer when I was going to do study abroad for a month and decided to travel around Europe for three instead of just being with my classmates. I’m a law student and I was struggling a lot after my first year and it was really that solo experience that reaffirmed my faith in humanity and drove me to push forward in my education and life choices. I had a life-changing experience last summer and I was, of course, bitten by the travel bug. I think it’s frightening for women to travel solo, but only at first, because when you’re there and untethered, it’s amazingly liberating.

    • DangerousBiz says:

That’s so awesome that you had such a life-changing experience while traveling last year, Melanie! Here’s to many more great solo adventures.

  • Stephanie says:

My dream solo destination is Indonesia, for the scuba diving.
My first big solo trip, 9 months in SE Asia, was solo because my travel partner bailed on me at the last minute. It turned out to be a blessing, as I realized I loved traveling alone. On that trip, I went snorkeling in Indonesia and was blown away by the beauty of the reefs. I can’t wait to go back, to go scuba diving. Being a solo female diver is great – it’s always easy to meet new dive buddies on the boats!

    • DangerousBiz says:

You are the first one (I think) to chose a destination based on diving! That’s awesome – and even more awesome that you enjoy being a solo female diver. You go, girl!

  • Valeria says:

Today, my dream solo destination is Ireland and Scotland. Tomorrow, who knows?

  • Karen Foo says:

Norway, to see the fijord and islands. 🙂

  • My DREAM destination right now is Israel (and Jordan). Since I’m studying in Milan, I’ve made several little solo trips to nearby countries, and have a month-long solo and unplanned backpacking trip through central/east Europe and south Italy coming up in July- August (I’m terrified and excited!!). I so wish Israel and Jordan came under the Schengen Visa… Instead I have to skip those countries for now, otherwise I’d be doing Europe a disservice 🙁

  • Patricia Pataki says:

    Hey fellow Travelers! 🙂

I will admit that I’m not as adventorous as some of the people commenting here. In fact, I have never travelled alone before, but I would love to start (and I am just 20 years old, so I think I have plenty of time:).

So, my dream destination would be Barcelona (Spain), because I think it’s a beautiful city, close to the ocean, which I rarely get to see, and I am dying to see the Sagrada Familia – it’s a breath-taking building on photos, so I can hardly imagine how amazing it would be in real life. But I can’t wait! 🙂

Thank you for this chance.:) Good summer to everyone!

My dream destination right now is South Africa, to get back and explore more, but the main reason is that I will be starting a mobile photography program at an art and education centre in Khayelitsha, a township outside Cape Town. I’ll be teaching women (15+) mobile photography to empower and create sustainable income through the sales of photographic art products at their on-site boutique and through other distribution channels in tourism and fair trade in South Africa as well as online and around the world through events. Could use some free nights in a hostel while I’m there teaching! 🙂

Morocco – for the spice, smells and sigthts. Norway – fulfiling a dream since childhood to visit Greig’s birthplace, the Fyords, and Kon Tiki. Ecuador – Galapagos and the blue footed boobies! and Finally Antarctica – bucket list is to see all the penguins in their natural habitat. Enough said. Travel in Safety. Jane
