Spotlight on Ohio

I’ve lived in Ohio all of my life (except that 5 months that I lived in New Zealand, but that doesn’t count), so it would follow that I have a lot to say about it. There can be an argument made that it’s difficult to actually “travel” in your home state or hometown. But I’d argue that, with the right mindset, it’s totally possible.

Check out some of the interesting, odd, and just plain cool things I’ve seen and done around Ohio.

Weekend Travel Guide to Northwest Ohio

I’ve called Northwest Ohio “home” for a few years now, and I’m constantly surprised at all it has to offer. If you’re looking to spend a weekend in Ohio, here are some suggestions for what to do and see.

A Day in Yellow Springs — Ohio’s Hippie Enclave

One of my favorite places in Ohio is Yellow Springs, the hippie-minded village in Southwest Ohio where the counterculture is still alive and well. Check out this colorful, quirky town through photos!

Traveling Closer to Home

You don’t always have to travel far away to find some beauty. There are things to discover, even in our own back yards.

Up in the Air: Flying Over Rural Ohio

My dad flies small planes, and I finally had the chance to go up with him on a hot, clear summer day. We flew over the area I grew up in, including flying over my current house.

Spin Yer Partner! at a Tractor Square Dance

Even though I’ve lived in Ohio all my life and have loved going to state fairs and other typical rural Ohio activities, I didn’t attend my first tractor square dance (yes, you read that right) until I was 23. It was awesome.

Cedar Point: Tops and Tips

Cedar Point has been named the world’s best amusement park time and time again. And it’s not hard to understand why. Read about my Top 5 Rides at the park, along with some practical tips if you’re planning to visit.

Cedar Point HalloWeekends: Behind the Scenes

Go behind the scenes of Cedar Point’s HalloWeekends events, seeing what it takes to put the event together, and finding out what it’s really like to be a Screamster. Plus, get a sneak peek of a new haunted house.

Screamster for a Night at Cedar Point’s HalloWeekends

I’ve already been behind the scenes. Now I want to go behind the makeup, too! Watch and read about what it’s like to be transformed into a Screamster for a night, and then take to the midway with the other ghouls and goblins.

Canfield Fair: Sights, Sounds & Memories

The Canfield Fair, the largest county fair in the U.S., has been a part of my life each year for as long as I can remember. Check out some of my photos, along with a video and some fair memories from the 164th Annual Canfield Fair.

5 Reasons to Visit Ohio in the Fall

Ohio can be great year-round, but fall is my favorite time of year in my home state. Find out why here.

Budweiser Clydesdales in Findlay

So what do you get when you combine a tradition of beer brewing with a tradition of draft horse breeding? The Budweiser Clydesdales, of course! I was lucky enough to see these gentle giants in action at the 2010 Flag City Oktoberfest in Findlay.

  1. As an Ohio girl myself (though I’ve lived in Oregon for the past 7 years), it’s nice to see that someone is giving Ohio the love it deserves. My favorite thing to do in Ohio is to spend a weekend camping in the Hocking Hills. I miss the rolling hills of southeastern Ohio.

    • Thanks, Kim! I’ve actually never been to Hocking Hills — can you believe it? I’ve lived in northern Ohio most of my life, and have never gotten down there. But I’m hoping to plan a trip there this coming spring or summer to do some hiking and go ziplining!
