Today’s photo was taken while hiking the Queen Charlotte Track in New Zealand’s Marlborough Sounds. Don’t be fooled into thinking that these trees are tropical palms — they are actually ferns. The fern (especially the silver fern) is one of New Zealand’s national symbols, and it was cool to see a lot of them up-close on this hike. This sculpture — called “Solfar” or “Sun Voyager” — has become somewhat of an icon in the Icelandic capital, and you are likely to see visitors photographing it at all times of year. Perth is the largest city in Western Australia, with the city and surrounding area being home to about 1 million people. I admit that I was a bit surprised to arrive in Perth and find out that it’s so small! I was expecting a larger city for some reason, but Perth more than makes up for it with all the great beaches close by.
