Photo of the Day: New Zealand Ferns

Today’s photo was taken while hiking the Queen Charlotte Track in New Zealand’s Marlborough Sounds. Don’t be fooled into thinking that these trees are tropical palms — they are actually ferns. The fern (especially the silver fern) is one of New Zealand’s national symbols, and it was cool to see a lot of them up-close on this hike. The Best Scuba Diving Spots in Greece

Today’s sponsored post is about a country I’m dying to visit (Greece) and an activity I’d really like to try (scuba diving). This post makes me want to book some lessons ASAP! Getting scuba-suited up, strapping on your canisters, and diving down to the briny deep is one of the most rewarding activities you can do while on holiday. It’s good exercise, it’s adventurous, and you’ll be rewarded with beautiful sights, from colorful corals to rare breeds of fish and other marine animals — even …Read more…

Photo of the Day: Sun Voyager

Today’s photo comes from Reykjavik, Iceland. This sculpture — called “Solfar” or “Sun Voyager” — has become somewhat of an icon in the Icelandic capital, and you are likely to see visitors photographing it at all times of year. The sculpture is said to be a “dream boat,” but most just associate it with the Vikings that first called Iceland home. You can find the sculpture on the water’s edge near downtown Reykjavik. If you like this photo, please share it with your friends on …Read more…

Getting to Gatwick Airport

If you’re flying from Gatwick Airport what are you best options for getting there in good time for your flight? Local resident Tamsin McCahill has some suggestions in today’s sponsored post. Moving to Brighton has its advantages. The cafe culture, the sea air, the sound of seagulls on your commute to work… no wonder everyone calls us smug. But another advantage I hadn’t considered was the town’s proximity to Gatwick. Just half an hour away (20 minutes at a push), Gatwick now feels like my …Read more…

Photo of the Day: Santa Monica Pier

The Santa Monica Pier — near the infamous Venice Beach boardwalk in Los Angeles — is a really fun place to visit, especially during the off-season when it’s not teeming with people. And, fun fact about Santa Monica — it’s the official end of historic Route 66! If you like this photo, please share it with your friends on Facebook, Twitter, G+, or StumbleUpon! Photo Essay: Castlepoint, NZ

I’ve written about my wild, windy day at Castlepoint before, but there are plenty more photos from that New Zealand outing that have been sitting on my computer for nearly 4 years, just itching to be shared. So, since I’ve been lazy this week and my brain is now mush after grad school finals, today I bring to you pretty pictures from Castlepoint. This coastal location can be found about 2 hours northeast of Wellington, and makes a fantastic weekend trip either as an alternative to …Read more…

Photo of the Day: Lake Tekapo

Today’s photo comes from Lake Tekapo in New Zealand. This glacier-fed lake is one of my favorites in NZ, both because of its unique blue color, and because of its location — I love just about anything that’s surrounded by mountains. Photo of the Day: Perth Skyline

Perth is the largest city in Western Australia, with the city and surrounding area being home to about 1 million people. I admit that I was a bit surprised to arrive in Perth and find out that it’s so small! I was expecting a larger city for some reason, but Perth more than makes up for it with all the great beaches close by. This particular skyline photo was taken from Kings Park, the city’s beautiful botanic garden. If you like this photo, please share …Read more…
