Each Saturday from now on, I’ll be sharing a photo with you from my travels around the world.

This week, the photo comes from the Matanuska Glacier near Sutton, Alaska.

I still maintain that glacier hiking is one of the coolest, most adventurous activities I have ever done. The particular hike pictured below took place on the Matanuska Glacier in August, 2012. This glacier near Sutton, Alaska is one of the most impressive I’ve seen up close. Not only does it have dramatic ice formations (not pictured), but the surrounding scenery is pretty dramatic, too. Can you spot the people in this shot? Hiking on a glacier is definitely a great way to be reminded just how small you are in the grand scheme of things.

Great photo! We went glacier hiking in Iceland just a few weeks ago and it was incredible. You’re absolutely right; we’re very small in the grand scheme of things. Being on a glacier is a wonderful reminder of the power of nature and how we all need to do our part to preserve it.

Absolutely! It’s astounding to learn how quickly the glaciers are retreating these days. Good to hear you got to see one up close in Iceland!

Great Photo. I did some camping in Denali and spent some time on the glaciers. Alaska is so beautiful and wild. I’m wasn’t the biggest fan of permafrost though.

“Beautiful and wild” is exactly how I would describe Alaska, too. (Though I don’t think I’d want to be up there in the winter!)

I haven’t made it to Denali myself yet… but it’s on my list. :)
