Every Thursday, A Dangerous Business will be shining the spotlight on a world nomad, travel blogger, armchair adventurer, or just someone really cool in the travel world. This week, the travelers are Danny and Jillian of I Should Log Off. Danny and Jilliand are two adventurous travelers dedicated to enjoying the world beyond the computer screen. They just finished their 21-month RTW and are adjusting to life off the road.
1. How do you define the word “traveler,” and why would you consider yourself one?
A traveler is someone with a sense of adventure. Doesn’t matter where you go, if you’re looking for an unscripted adventure then you are a traveler. Yes, I’d consider us travelers.
2. What has been your favorite travel experience thus far?
The whole of Africa. Traveling Cape Town to Cairo overland was an amazing adventure and full of surprises. It was by far the most challenging and exciting time on our RTW. Nothing at all prepared us for Africa, it was hard… but yes, we’d do it again.
3. How about your proudest travel moment?
Definitely Summiting Kilimanjaro. The overnight hike to the summit was incredibly difficult, both mentally and physically. We learned a lot about how strong our relationship is and how weak our bodies can be.
4. Have you had any travel mishaps or bad experiences? If so, have these influenced how you view the place where they happened? Would you go back?
We’ve had plenty of bad experiences and some had huge affects on how we remember the place; unruly locals in Ethiopia, government forces in China, etc… We’re not interested in going back to those places or any of the others we had great times in anytime soon. We’re interested in new places.
5. Name one thing you can’t travel without.
Each other. Surviving on the road as a couple is hard, but it’s great to be able to share the memories and reminisce.
6. Name one thing you wish you COULD travel without.
Connectivity… all of it. There is a reason our blog is called i-should-log-off.
7. What do you think has been the biggest thing you’ve learned while traveling (about yourself, a destination, a culture, travel itself)?
Anything is possible. We’ve learned just how easy it can be to go out and do great things.
8. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
The USA. Sure our politics suck and education is even worse… but the garbage man comes ever week, we don’t have to worry about rebel forces creating anarchy and the supermarket stocks salsa, peanut butter and even curry. There is a system here and, although not perfect, it works and we can appreciate that better now than we ever could before.
9. Name one place you’d like to see or one experience you’d like to have before you die.
Just one? Haha… nope. We made an entire bucket list and that’s still missing some big items.
10. If there was one thing you wish somebody would have told you before you started traveling, what would it be?
It’s hard work. Take a vacation from travel once in awhile. Treat yourself to ice cream at all opportunities. Call home. Practice charades and pictionary. Talk to strangers. Plan to spend money, it’s more fun that way. Ooops, that was more than one… I’ll stop there, but above all else remember to HAVE FUN!
