In Ireland’s County Wicklow, nestled in a valley that was carved out by glaciers, sits the remains of a monastic settlement. This is Glendalough. The settlement was founded in the 6th century by the hermit priest St. Kevin, and was destroyed in 1398 by the English. Parts of the settlement still remain, however, such as St. Kevin’s Church, the Round Tower, old gravestones in the cemetery, and  the foundations of other chapels and a cathedral.

I visited Glendalough on an overcast winter day. Everything was rain-kissed, green, and quiet. It was beautiful.
