I grew up around boats. I don’t live on the ocean, or near a large lake or river. In fact, the closest body of water to me growing up was the small pond in my front yard. But my dad is a fisherman, and, as such, always had at least one or two boats around.
When I was younger, I enjoyed going out on the boat — whether to fish with my dad, or to go tubing at a nearby large lake. Boats were fun — are still fun. Canoes, sail boats, bass boats, ferries, sightseeing boats, cruise ships… you name it, they’re all fun.
There’s just something about being out on the open water, a stiff breeze whipping your hair around while you listen to waves lapping against the hull. Unless, of course, you’re prone to seasickness… then maybe this sounds terrible.
In honor of boats and boating around the world, here are some of my favorite travel photos taken either on or of boats (or sometimes both!).
Do you have any favorite water-based photos or stories? Which parts of the world do you think have the best harbors, ports, or seascapes?

I grew up around sailboats all my life so I can relate!
There’s something magical about being near the water!!

I agree! It’s funny, though, because being on boats often makes me seasick these days. But I still love them. I just remember to pack my Dramamine!
I love a good boat ride, though I always feel sicker then I remember, which kind of sucks, yet I keep going out…
Sydney is my absolute favourite harbour city. The bay and harbour are just so beautiful! Vancouver is a (newly discovered) close second…

I love Sydney, too! I almost included a photo from there, but I didn’t take any fantastic ones of boats. I spent too much time photographing the Opera House and bridge! I really must get to Vancouver some day. I loved Victoria, and I’m told Vancouver is just as awesome!
I LOVE boats!!! I hope one day I can learn how to sail. GREAT pics!!!!!!!!

Thanks, Andi!
All beautiful photos. I especially like the one with the alligator. For some reason, I’m fascinated by those creatures.
Thanks! Yeah, alligators are pretty cool. It’s crazy to think that they’re basically as old as the dinosaurs!
So what’s the theme here?….totally kidding! I love boats too. I’m from Port Huron Michigan so I grew up around the Great Lakes. It always surprises me when people come to visit and they say, “wow, there is so much water”. I always forget that not everybody is surrounded by water.

I don’t think people realize just how big the Great Lakes are until they actually see them. There’s a lot of water there!
I didn’t grow up around boats but wish I had. I do welcome every boating opportunity though even though they’re rare when you drive truck for a living.
