Beginning tomorrow, I’m going to be gone for roughly 10 days. I’m leaving (way too early) tomorrow morning for Seattle, and then boarding a cruise ship bound for Alaska on Friday afternoon. It’ll be the first vacation my family has taken together in a while (excluding the family reunion we went to last summer), so I’m pretty excited. I can’t wait to see mountains again!
But, seeing as I’ll be at sea a lot and want to enjoy my vacation, I won’t really be updating much. So, instead, I’m planning to just schedule some re-posts while I’m gone of things that you may have missed. If I can throw in a random cruise photo here or there, I will, but no promises.
I’m going to try to keep my Twitter updated though (at least when we’re in Seattle and Alaskan ports), so if you want to keep up with my adventures, follow me! (Or, you can keep an eye on my Twitter updates in the right-side navigation on this page.)
Where am I going?
- Seattle for a day or so
- A Royal Caribbean Alaskan cruise where we’re docking in:
- Juneau, Alaska
- Skagway, Alaska
- Victoria, British Columbia
Be prepared for many stories, photos, and hopefully videos when I return.
Why am I not blogging?
I do, of course, have the option of blogging while I’m gone. I could lug my laptop along and pay for very expensive wifi service on the ship, but, really, who wants to do that? I also could pay to use one of the ship’s computers each day (again for a pretty hefty fee), but I think I’ll pass.
Actually, monetary issues aside, I just don’t want to have to worry about anything associated with blogging or the Internet while I’m away on this particular vacation. (I don’t want to have to worry about whether my expensive computer is safe or not in my stateroom, either.) I want to just enjoy myself.
These days, I’m acutely aware of how much time per day I spend getting sucked into sites like Facebook and Twitter and all the various travel blogs and websites I read. I text like a fiend, and I never, ever go anywhere without my phone. This can’t be healthy. I don’t want to look back on my 20s and only remember scenes of myself sitting on my couch pecking away at my keyboard and reading about the adventures that other people were having. As much as I love blogging, this upcoming vacation seems like the perfect opportunity to temporarily cut myself off (mostly, at least) from the cyber world.
So, aside from the occasional Twitter update, for the next week I’m going to turn off my phone, and cut myself off from the Internet. I’m going to take way too many pictures and videos, and not worry about when or how I’m going to edit them. I’m not going to worry about my next blog post, or how to get people to come and read it. I’m simply going to enjoy my family vacation and all the sights I’ll be seeing along the way.
The worrying about blog content part can come after I return. And I’m okay with keeping it that way.
Bon voyage!
(But really… keep visiting while I’m gone. There will still be stuff to read!)

Have a great time!
I think it’s a great idea about leaving the blogging behind on this trip. Lets be honest, we spend so much time on our travels trying to get the perfect picture and many hours writing it up on the blog that we forget to enjoy the moment . I have often been on a trip just to find I have seen the trip through a lens rather than really appreciating it whilst there.
Cruising to Alaska, I am very jealous!
Thanks, Ross! And yeah, I’m sure I’ll still be taking way too many pictures/video clips, but it’s actually a weight off my shoulders knowing that I won’t have to worry about blogging about it the whole time I’m there. Like I said, I just want to enjoy and appreciate my vacation!
